Having a basic wine knowledge has always been considered a social advantage, as true today as any time in history. The ability to confidently order, serve, appraise and appreciate a wine is a learned skill which is both admired and envied by those lacking in it, as well as enhancing the social pleasures of those that do.

As in any field there are experts in wine making and appreciation, however gaining a basic wine knowledge is something that can be readily obtained, and added to as your competence and confidence grows. Your perfect time to learn is right now. Wine is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and along with that has come many opportunities for you to gain basic wine knowledge from people in the know.

The world of fine wine can seem to be very cryptic and difficult to get in to. After all, how is a beginner to know which glass is which? How about the difference between a burgundy and a pinot noir? Or which wine goes best with Camembert?

Learning Opportunities Abound

Luckily, you aren’t alone. Basic wine knowledge is highly sought after, and a whole new market has sprung up around the desire to know how to select, store, pair, and drink wine.

The best place to look for basic wine knowledge is the internet. There are many sites devoted entirely to the pursuit of wine selection and tasting. The more advanced sites can be very intimidating, but don’t let them put you off. Keep looking until you find a site that is at a comfortable level for you.

If, like many people, you learn better in person, you may want to take a basic wine knowledge class. These are often offered through vineyards or wine distributors. Some community colleges have even been known to hold basic wine knowledge classes!

If there are specific things that you are interested in learning about, be sure that the class covers those topics. If you are most interested in purchasing wine and the class is all about tasting, you’ll feel unsatisfied by the outcome.

Once you find a class that looks good, inquire about the fees. Some classes are free, others involve a small tasting fee, and still others – such as community college classes – will carry a larger fee. However, if you judge the basic wine knowledge you’ll learn to be worth the fee, there’s nothing wrong with paying for it.

What You can Expect to Learn

Every class will be different, but in any basic wine knowledge class, you can expect to learn a few common things.

First of all, you will learn how to taste wine. You may be surprised to learn that tasting the wine actually starts long before the glass touches your lips. The experience of tasting wine starts from the moment it is poured into your glass.

You should also learn the terminology used to describe the sensations that the wine inspires. You’ll learn why some of the terms you’ve heard used to describe wine on TV are actually undesirable qualities for a wine.

You will probably also learn how to select and order wine. This is a great benefit to anyone who has ever felt snubbed by a snobby waiter because of their lack of wine knowledge!

Depending on how long and in-depth your basic wine knowledge class is, you’ll go into more detail on many other aspects of enjoying wine. When you complete the class, you can walk out of there knowing that you have not only gained valuable skills and knowledge – you’ve also had a great time.

A basic wine knowledge will enhance your appreciation of wine, enabling you to select a wine to suit the meal and the occasion. It will also allow you to converse confidently with wine snobs and aficionados alike!
